Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee.
The Arabica tree originates from Ethiopia, where it grew wild. The word coffee comes from the Ethiopian town of Kaffa, from where the species was spread to the Arab countries.
In 2008, the Ethiopian commodity market started trading coffee.
The taste characteristics of Ethiopian coffees are mainly fruity (black & red berries), floral and spicy, with a higher acidity and a light to medium mouthfeel.
The best coffee beans come from Ethiopia
About 50% of coffee production is grown at an altitude of 1500 meters or more.
About half of the coffee produced is self-consumed.
Ethiopia is the fourth largest producer of coffee in the world, after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia.
The Ethiopians have strong cultural traditions and important events are always opened with a 'coffee ceremony' that can last up to 3 hours
